Shared ownership enables you to buy a share in a property whilst paying rent on the remainder. The share is usually 25%, 50% or 75%.
Most people will still need a mortgage for the purchased share.
Shared ownership schemes are usually offered by Housing Associations and the rent is payable to them. You will have to meet their criteria, but every scheme is different.
