Council properties are let unfurnished, which means that neither furniture nor kitchen appliances are provided. Kitchen facilities are also sometimes basic, and room sizes can be smaller than in private sector housing. Properties are equipped with either a bath or a shower, and this is usually indicated in the property adverts.
Most council properties were built over 30 years ago and whilst their internal details reflect the standards of that time, properties are continually being improved.
Since 1980 most new social housing has been developed by Housing Associations. These housing developments are often at street properties or small blocks of flats and sometimes incorporate off street parking and internal storage facilities.
Councils and housing associations are working to ensure their housing stock meets the 'decent homes' standard set by the government. Many properties have already been refurbished.
Housing Associations are also obliged to maintain their properties in a good state of repair.
